The DVLA uses your driving licence number to keep track of your driving record. You are free to look up your driving record too, but to do so you may need your driving licence number!

Checking your driving record is useful if you want to know what types of vehicle you can drive on your licence. Your record will also tell you if there are any penalty points on your licence, along with any unspent convictions. If you’ve been disqualified from driving, for instance, checking your record will let you know when you’ll be able to drive again.

How To Get Your Driving Licence Number If You’ve Lost It

Your driving licence number is a unique set of letters and numbers that the DVLA uses to identify you, and to keep track of your driving record.

Where can you find your driving licence number?

Just take a look at your licence. On the photo side, on row 5, you’ll find a string of 16 letters and numbers. The first five characters will be the same first five characters of your surname. This is your driving licence number.

But what if you’ve lost your driving licence? How can you get your driving licence number if you’ve lost it?

How To Find Out Your Driving Licence Number If You Cannot Find Your Driving Licence

Contact the DVLA directly. They can send all the information you need to whichever address your licence is registered to.
Use the Government’s Driving Record Site. If you supply a few personal details, such as your National Insurance Number, your name, and your address, you should be able to access key details about your driving record. This can include your driving licence number. Can’t find your National Insurance Number? Just check your last payslip!
Look for any other DVLA documents. Your driving licence number may also be featured on any communications the DVLA has previously sent you, either by email or post, such as car tax reminders. You could also check your car insurance documents, as you may have shared your driving licence number with your insurer when taking out a policy.

Lost Your Licence? Make Sure You Report It

If you cannot find your driving licence number because you’ve lost your driving licence, then you should report the lost licence to the DVLA immediately. You will then need to apply for a new licence. Here’s a guide on the DVLA’s site to what you should do if your driving licence is lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.

We also have a guide for what you should do if you cannot find your driving licence – which includes advice on whether or not you can still drive while you’re waiting for a new licence.
