USAA makes two key appointments


USAA has announced two key appointments, tapping Joseph Gates (pictured above left) as senior vice president and chief risk officer for the P&C company and David Selchen (pictured above right) as senior vice president for organizational and total management.

Gates has more than 20 years of industry experience. Prior to joining USAA, he served as chief risk officer at American Family Insurance. Before that, he held portfolio and catastrophe management roles at American Family and Homesite Insurance. Gates also led an international team specializing in portfolio and catastrophe management for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty in Chicago and Munich, USAA said in a press release. In his new role, Gates will report to Neeraj Singh, chief risk officer for USAA.

“Joseph’s global experience and expertise in overall risk management, analytics, catastrophe management and modeling will help us effectively manage a range of industry-wide business challenges and better serve our members,” Singh said.

Selchen has more than 20 years of experience as a leadership and people strategy advisor. He has also served in executive positions for companies including CBRE, BP, and Hewlett Packard. Selchen holds a doctoral degree in psychology from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of WInnipeg.

Selchen’s new role will include developing USAA’s talent strategy. He will report to Tamla Oates-Forney, chief human resources officer.

David will be instrumental in creating a world-class talent management strategy to lead us into our next century.”

In October, USAA announced that bank general counsel and senior vice president Jason Klein would expand his role to become chief corporate governance officer. In September, the company announced the appointment of Darrius Jones as senior vice president of enterprise digital, design and innovation.
