Treasury, finance ministers sworn in after Labor victory

23 May 2022

Jim Chalmers has been sworn in as Treasurer and Katy Gallagher as Finance Minister following the Australian Labor Party’s victory in Saturday’s federal election.

Five government ministers were sworn in by Governor-General David Hurley this morning, with the key roles confirmed early as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong are flying to Tokyo today for a Quad meeting with leaders from the US, India and Japan.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles was also sworn in at the ceremony at Government House in Canberra.

Other portfolios, and clarification over the responsible minister for insurance, have yet to be announced.

Labor is still short of the seat numbers required for majority Government as vote counting continues, but Mr Albanese said this morning he had spoken with existing crossbench members on confidence and supply.

Mr Albanese also said he was awaiting advice from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on when Parliament could resume.
