Specialty Program Group Canada (SPGC) has become the first managing general agent in the country’s insurance industry to achieve EcoClaim certification.

The milestone is part of SPGC’s initiatives that are aimed at assisting the MGA in reaching its net zero target.

“An important priority is advancing our climate performance and greenhouse gas (GhG) reporting in alignment with our ESG (environmental, social, and governance) goals,” SPGC – the name behind operating brands Cansure, Beacon, and i3 Underwriting – noted.

“As part of our strategic plan, we’ve identified three key initiatives to assist in achieving Net Zero by 2030, including committing to decarbonizing our supply chain.”

In addition to the EcoClaim certification, the other initiatives relate to SPGC’s carbon footprint and a partnership with The Nature Force, a climate resilience initiative.

“SPGC is taking bold steps as climate leaders in the insurance industry,” EcoClaim chief executive Jodi Scarlett (pictured second from left during the SPG Earth Month event) said.

“As the first EcoClaim-certified MGA, SPGC is driving broader climate action among their suppliers and community. We are delighted to see an immediate impact on reduced construction waste to landfill as part of our partnership.”

It was highlighted that SPGC plans to expand its annual GhG inventories to include Scope 3 supply chain emissions while leveraging EcoClaim’s training and tracking tools. The company will also help reduce climate impacts through its tie-up with The Nature Force.

“Partnering with organizations such as EcoClaim and The Nature Force are easy strategies for industry participants of any size to support,” SPGC president and chief executive Cameron Copeland stated.

“I welcome an opportunity to share insights into our efforts with anyone in the industry looking to strengthen their ESG performance.”
