New Zealand’s business community is reeling after Patricia McKay, wife of Doug McKay, a director of IAG Holdings Ltd., was killed during a violent robbery attempt at a luxurious Californian shopping mall. According to news.com.au, the incident unfolded at Newport Beach’s upscale Fashion Island, where the couple was on vacation.

Reports indicate that Patricia McKay, 68, lost her life when a robbery turned fatal on Wednesday. Eyewitnesses recount a harrowing scene where two assailants accosted the McKays, attempting to wrestle away their belongings. Amid the struggle, one assailant allegedly brandished a gun, pressing it against Doug McKay’s temple.

“I saw the barrel press on his temple,” recounted a witness who chose to remain anonymous, describing the moment she fled in fear for her safety.

The situation escalated when the perpetrators forcibly dragged Patricia McKay towards a carpark, where she was fatally struck by a fleeing vehicle. Despite efforts by bystanders and the swift response of Newport Beach police, Patricia succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Three suspects—Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, Jaden Cunningham, and Malachi Edward Darnell—were apprehended following a high-speed pursuit.

Prominent figure in the NZ business landscape

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Patricia McKay’s death as “an absolute tragedy”, extending condolences to the McKay family and emphasizing their significance within the community.

Doug McKay is an influential figure in both New Zealand and international spheres for his extensive contributions to business and governance, including serving as the inaugural CEO of Auckland Council. His current roles include chairing Vector and serving as a director for IAG Holdings Ltd. and the National Australia Bank.
