A survey by CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) has brought to light significant gaps in travel insurance knowledge and preparation among its members. The study shows that a considerable 40% of Ontario members who travel do not consistently secure emergency medical travel insurance, exposing them to financial jeopardy during their journeys.

Kaitlynn Furse, director of corporate communications at CAA SCO, expressed concern over the findings, saying: “In a world of uncertainties, our survey highlights a critical gap in travel preparedness among Ontarians. At CAA, we believe in empowering travellers with knowledge so they can explore confidently and securely.”

Further findings from the survey indicate that 23% of the respondents embarked on their most recent trip outside the province without any travel insurance, risking significant out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an emergency.

The survey also found that one-third of insured travellers (33%) depend solely on coverage provided through their credit cards. In CAA SCO’s view, this is particularly troubling for individuals over the age of 65, who may find themselves with insufficient protection due to the limitations of such policies.

In an effort to bridge the gap, CAA SCO launched its first-ever CAA Travel Wise Week. The initiative aims to promote travel insurance education, helping Ontarians understand the dangers of travelling without proper insurance and guiding them on how to secure the necessary coverage for their trips.

Supporting the need for increased awareness, data from Orion Travel Insurance shows a 14% rise in the average cost of medical claims since 2019.

“Costs associated with everything from an ear infection to the use of an air ambulance have risen over the last few years due to medical inflation, underscoring the continued importance of travel insurance for life’s unexpected complications,” Furse said.

Meanwhile, for CAA Travel Wise Week, CAA SCO shared travel protection tips including knowing the cancellation policies for all bookings, from accommodations to car rentals; checking cover limits or restrictions; and noting emergency contact numbers.
