Outgoing IAG executive to become Unity Credit Union CEO

Originally from Hawke’s Bay, Hughes worked at the Māori Language Commission during and after his university studies before relocating to London. After returning to New Zealand, he joined ANZ, where held several roles in finance, marketing and operations, culminating in the role of general manager, business banking.

Hughes will succeed acting chief executive Brian Hayr.

“Kevin’s expertise and extensive leadership experience in the financial services industry will be a great asset to the Unity business,” said Louise Edwards, chair of Unity. “His customer-centric approach and knowledge of leading complex digital transformation will ensure member value and experience remains at the forefront of everything we do.

“Our board is thrilled to have attracted this calibre of talent following an extensive search from a field of highly skilled applicants.”

Unity is a not-for-profit, New Zealand-owned financial cooperative that provides banking services, as well as loans, mortgage, and insurance.

“I am excited to join an organisation with a strong purpose and community focus like Unity,” Hughes said. “Unity has such an important role to play in the future wellbeing of our members and their communities. I am looking forward to the opportunity to enhance that role and to help set Unity up for success, for many years to come.”
