NSW appoints Emergency Management Deputy Commissioner

5 December 2022

The NSW Government has appointed Peter Thurtell to the newly created role of Police Deputy Commissioner Emergency Management.

“The creation of this new role delivers on one of the key recommendations of the independent Flood Inquiry and is another step on the path to ensuring NSW is better positioned to prepare for, respond and recover the next time a disaster strikes,” Deputy Premier and Police Minister Paul Toole said today.

Deputy Commissioner Thurtell joined the police force in 1985 and has held numerous roles, including taking up regional and metropolitan police commands. Early this year he was appointed Deputy Commissioner, Regional NSW Field Operations.

“We have seen over the last three years that the world we live in continues to evolve and, more than ever, there is a need to be prepared and adaptable to the changing needs of the community,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.

The new appointment is effective from Sunday.
