Insurance Business Canada recently unveiled its list of the Top Insurance Employers of 2023, spotlighting industry-leading organizations that prioritize their workforce’s well-being and create conducive environments for professional growth.

Companies were selected based on employee evaluations across more than 20 metrics, encompassing compensation, job security, work-life balance, career advancement, and diversity and inclusion.

Northbridge Financial is among IBC’s Top Insurance Employers for this year, recognized for its commitment to a “people-first culture.”

Harold Weckworth, senior vice president of people and culture, said Northbridge Financial’s approach to company culture is rooted in three pillars: prioritizing employees, fostering teamwork and collaboration, and effecting positive change within its workforce.

“These pillars guide everything we do, from recognizing our employees’ achievements to offering flexible work arrangements,” added Weckworth. “Plus, we strongly emphasize having fun while we work, creating a positive and enjoyable work environment.”

In IBC’s survey, employees spoke of their experience with this approach.

One respondent praised the company’s leadership: “This is a company where our leaders listen; they know us, ask how the family is doing, and know the names of our immediate family members.”

Someone else lauded Northbridge Financial’s people-centric culture: “No matter from the front line to management, everyone seems to be friendly, helpful, and easy to talk to.”

Another employee talked about the benefits offered by the company, praising it for having “an extensive and well-thought-out coverage policy.”

Aside from competitive benefits, a pension, and an employee share purchase plan, Northbridge Financial has a well-being program that offers health coaching and mental health training.

Other offerings include generous time-away policies such as me-days, well-being days, a vacation purchase plan, and a conducive work-life balance through summer hours and early extended weekend closures.

Northbridge Financial also supports employees with sabbaticals and new family member ramp-up assistance.

“Accessibility to leaders at all levels is a big part of our culture,” said Weckworth. “Employees can realize the benefits of working with a larger, national organization but with a small company feel.”
