Luxury condo developer confirms second construction site collapse
Evertrust Developments has reported that a collapse had occurred at one of its luxury condominium sites – just eight days after a similar collapse at the same site happened.
Welland Fire Services visited the construction site in question on Sunday following calls from residents who had heard a disturbance and saw more fragments fall from an already damaged part of the structure.
In a release earlier this week, Evertrust Developments confirmed that “partial structural damage” had occurred to a south tower at the Welland, ON construction site. The same portion of the construction site had previously suffered damage, which was reported to the Ministry of Labour on Feb. 18.
“As Evertrust Developments awaits the MOL go-ahead to move forward with repairs on their Upper Vista Welland construction site … secondary damage occurred today within the same area,” Evertrust Developments said in its statement, adding that the rest of the building “remains intact.”
Global News reported that the $55-million development is a canal-front condominium located along Prince Charles Drive, with 200 units sold out. No injuries were reported following the collapse.
Orders from the MOL have restricted workers from entering the site to assess the damage and restart construction.
“In an effort to move proactively despite the situation, the company has taken the initiative of moving construction machinery on location and are prepared to remediate the building as soon as permitted to do so,” said Evertrust Developments.
