Lancashire Holdings, the specialty insurance and reinsurance group, has added experienced and well-known industry veteran Bryan Joseph of Vario Partners as a non-executive director.

Joseph has had a distinguished career across the consulting, insurance, reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) space.

His career saw him spend around two decades working at consultancy PwC, becoming a Partner and Global Actuarial Leader for the firm, with a P&C focus.

More recently, Joseph was one of the founders of Vario Partners, a company established to advise on and facilitate the transfer of portfolios of insurance risk to the capital markets through securitisation (ILS).

Vario Partners was launched in 2014 and more recently established a partnership in 2020 with Hyperion (now Howden) to launch a collateralised whole-account reinsurance offering backed by insurance-linked securities (ILS).

Lancashire Holdings has appointed Bryan Joseph as a Non-Executive Director and a member of both its Audit and Underwriting and Underwriting Risk Committees.

With over forty year’s experience in insurance, reinsurance and actuarial roles, Joseph has also held positions on the board and committees at XL Catlin and within AXA XL.

Joseph brings Lancashire significant expertise, as well as an innovative approach to risk transfer and the way capital markets can fund reinsurance using alternative and securitised methods.

Peter Clarke, Lancashire’s Chairman, commented on the appointment, “We are delighted to welcome Bryan to the Lancashire Group as a Non-Executive Director. Bryan has extensive experience as an actuary within the international insurance industry and a proven track record as a director. Bryan will be an excellent fit for the Group, bringing significant additional expertise to the Board to help us deliver on our strategic ambitions.”

Joseph has stepped down from all AXA XL Directorships in 2023 to take on this new role with Lancashire.

With Lancashire having capital market interests in reinsurance through its Lancashire Capital Management (LCM) division, Joseph’s expertise may be helpful in driving forward that side of the firm’s business, as well as the traditional sides.
