INsight podcast: reinsurance in focus as floods hit again

6 July 2022

The severe flooding in NSW and reinsurance market implications from Australia’s natural catastrophes are discussed during the latest Insurance News podcast.

NSW has experienced four flood emergencies in the past 18 months and insurers expect the number of claims from the latest event to continue rising. At the same time, global reinsurers are becoming more cautious about property catastrophe risks.

This week’s edition of INsight, hosted by Insurance News MD Andrew Silcox, features the observations of Chairman Terry McMullan, Deputy Editor Wendy Pugh and Senior Journalist Miranda Maxwell.

The podcast discusses cash settlements after catastrophes, and political fighting over premium savings the previous federal government flagged with the introduction of the northern Australia cyclone reinsurance pool.

Also highlighted are concerns over insurer use of consumer data that can be gathered from social media and other online activity, and calls by an academic for increased regulation before practices become entrenched.
