Singapore-based Igloo, which insures delivery riders in Thailand, Singapore, The Philippines and Vietnam, has appointed LiLiang Zhu as Chief Technology Officer.

He will oversee tech hubs in China’s Chengdu and India’s Pune, managing more than 70 engineers and developers.

Igloo recently raised $US46 million ($67.68 million) and says it is bringing cover to large underinsured segments in southeast Asia. It offers a parametric product to rice farmers in Vietnam which uses blockchain-based smart contracts to automate claims payouts.

“LiLiang’s appointment comes at an opportune time,” CEO and Co-founder Raunak Mehta said. “We are primed to cement our position as a leading regional insurtech … as we introduce more innovative digital insurance products.”

Mr Zhu was formerly ZA Tech VP Engineering and has held senior leadership roles at Ant Financial and eBaoTech Corporation. Igloo also appointed Sanjiv Shah as Head of Product for Consumer and Astha Desai as Head of Product for Intermediary Platform Services (IPS).

The insurtech says it has facilitated more than 300 million digital insurance policies and has partnered with over 55 well-known brands in insurance, telecommunications, e-commerce, hospitality, health tech and financial services.
