Gallagher Bassett has introduced a new initiative focused on driving conversations about workplace safety as part of National Safe Work Month.

The risk management and claims provider is using the campaign to spotlight real-life stories of injured workers who successfully returned to work with the help of their case managers.

Workplace safety challenges in Australia

The launch of Gallagher Bassett’s initiative comes in response to ongoing concerns about workplace injuries and fatalities across Australia.

Serious injuries in 2023 were most common in industries such as agriculture, construction, healthcare, transport, public administration, and manufacturing. These six sectors accounted for 61% of all serious compensation claims.

Vehicle-related accidents were the leading cause of workplace fatalities, making up 42% of the 200 deaths reported in 2023. Additionally, fatalities resulting from falls saw a notable increase, with a 71% rise compared to the previous year.

The campaign’s central feature is a series of video testimonials where workers share their experiences of overcoming workplace injuries.

Debbie Vounakis, head of sales and client services – personal injury at Gallagher Bassett, said that these videos are intended to generate crucial discussions on occupational health and safety.

“By sharing these personal experiences, we aim to create awareness and encourage organisations to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their people at all times,” she said.

One of the workers featured, Stephen, described how the support from Gallagher Bassett played a vital role in his recovery.

“Without the help of Gallagher Bassett and their support during my return-to-work journey, I would never have gone back to work,” he said. “The steps and measures provided by Gallagher Bassett made me realise I am going to get through this, with their help whenever I need it.”

Importance of supporting injured employees

The initiative highlights the importance of effective claims management and long-term support for injured employees.

Vounakis stressed that workplace injuries serve as a reminder of the need for preventative safety measures.

“Every workplace injury serves as a powerful reminder of the need for stronger preventative measures. By sharing these videos, Gallagher Bassett aims to inspire change and support the conversation around a positive safety culture,” she said.

This initiative is in line with National Safe Work Month’s broader objective to raise awareness about the importance of safety measures and their impact on workers, businesses, and communities.
