Fidelity Life has unveiled the recipients of its seven Career Connect scholarships for 2024.

Valued at a maximum of $5,000 each, these scholarships are specifically tailored to exceptional candidates from underrepresented demographics within the industry.

The seven chosen recipients, alongside 14 other budding advisers, are embarking on their journey towards achieving a Level-5 Certificate in Financial Services.

“The calibre of this year’s scholarship applicants was exceptional, making our selection process both challenging and inspiring,” said Bronwyn Kirwan, chief commercial officer at Fidelity Life. “Our scholarship recipients demonstrate not just the smarts, but also the soft skills required to become a successful adviser. Their passion for making a positive impact on their communities is truly commendable,” she said. “Our Advice for good research highlights the critical role professional advice plays in improving the financial and emotional wellbeing of New Zealanders, and it’s exciting to meet such a dedicated and diverse group ready to take on this mission.”

Diversity highlighted

In terms of diversity, this year’s intake boasts a 95% representation of women and 24% from Māori or Pasifika backgrounds, underscoring Career Connect’s commitment to inclusivity.

Brian Knight, CEO of Kaplan Professional, extended congratulations to Anna Devereux, the recipient of the Women in Finance scholarship.

“We are thrilled to be able to support Anna with what we hope will be the first of many Women in Finance scholarships through Career Connect – we offer her our best wishes for a bright and impactful future in financial advice,” he said.

Glenn Croasdale, chief client officer at FMG, highlighted the significance of supporting rural advisers.

“We’re proud to again be supporting a rural adviser through Fidelity Life’s Career Connect programme. With many of New Zealand’s rural communities facing challenges, access to good financial advice remains important. The more support we can provide our farmers and growers to help boost their financial resilience, the better,” he said.

2024 Career Connect scholarship recipients

Pounamu scholarship for Māori applicant: Ahwina Scott

Scott (pictured above) said she aims to enhance Māori communities’ financial wellbeing through better access to quality financial advice.

Kōwhai scholarship for Pasifika applicant: Jenny Silva

Silva aims to help New Zealanders make informed financial decisions and ensure the future financial stability of Pasifika communities.

Rural scholarship by FMG: Grace McIntyre

Coming from a rural community, McIntyre aims to raise awareness of the importance of quality financial advice and insurance to protect rural livelihoods.

Women in Finance scholarship by Kaplan Professional: Anna Devereux

With a background in finance, Devereux said she looks forward to helping New Zealanders achieve financial literacy and security.

Paua scholarship for an applicant who demonstrates excellence: Marna Breetzke

Breetzke said she looks forward to educating more New Zealanders on the importance of financial advice.

Toe Toe scholarship for outstanding young applicants: Sydnee Taylor

With a background in health and fitness, Taylor aims to enhance people’s wellbeing by helping them make informed financial decisions.

Passionate about supporting others, Marr wants to help more New Zealanders achieve financial literacy.
