Dentons expands Christchurch office with new litigation partner

Global law firm Dentons is reinforcing its presence in Christchurch with the addition of Willie Hamilton as its new litigation partner, effective March 3.

The move is meant to strengthen Dentons’ dispute resolution practice in New Zealand, particularly across the South Island, the firm said in a news release announcing the appointment.

Hamilton joins Dentons with 15 years of litigation experience. He specialises in commercial disputes, liability insurance, and sports law. He has represented clients in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and various specialist tribunals, and regularly advises major insurers on professional indemnity, public and general liability, and fraud-related claims.

Hayden Wilson, chair of Dentons in New Zealand and Dentons Global vice-chair, commented on the appointment and said Hamilton’s strategic approach to litigation aligns with the firm’s broader objectives.

“Willie is an outstanding litigator,” Wilson said. “His ability to navigate complex disputes with confidence and clarity earns him the trust of clients, and his commitment to collaboration and mentoring younger team members will help us continue developing our talent.

Hamilton also commented on his new role and said he was looking forward to working on Dentons’ dispute resolution team.

“Dentons’ values align with my approach to client service and development of staff,” he said. “I look forward to applying my experience to help our clients achieve their goals and to contributing to the firm’s continued success, particularly in Christchurch and the South Island.”

The firm has been growing its presence in the region, with Hamilton’s appointment marking another step in its expansion strategy.

Charles Spillane, chief executive of Dentons in New Zealand, said the firm remains focused on strengthening its capabilities.

“Willie is a true leader,” Spillane said. “He has built a strong reputation by consistently adding value for his clients when they need it most. His appointment reflects our commitment to expanding our talent pool and national reach to better meet client needs.”

Hamilton joins Dentons from Chapman Tripp, where he was senior associate for over six years.
