Tokyo-based Dai-ichi Life Holdings has announced the appointment of Figen Ulgen as the chief data and AI officer (CDAO), effective April 1.

This appointment was part of a broader announcement that complements an earlier communication on Feb. 14, detailing additional executive changes.

In her new role, Ulgen will oversee the insurer’s data management and artificial intelligence strategy. Her responsibilities will encompass enhancing data security, establishing governance protocols, and adopting advanced technologies to secure actionable insights. A key part of her role includes assessing new AI technologies and potential investment avenues to strengthen Dai-ichi Life’s capabilities in this field.

Ulgen will operate under the guidance of Stephen Barnham, the company’s chief information officer and chief digital officer.

Figen Ulgen’s career

Prior to her appointment, Ulgen served as chief data officer at a leading tech firm, and her resume includes senior leadership roles at multinational corporations, driving forward their data analytics and business intelligence strategies.

Ulgen holds a PhD in computer engineering from the University of Tokushima.

The DE&I Statement outlines Dai-ichi Life’s foundational approach to fostering a collaborative and diverse working environment. The company’s leadership, including president and CEO Tetsuya Kikuta, is actively promoting this vision across the organisation, the company said.
