Burns & Wilcox, the wholesale insurance brokerage and underwriting firm, has announced that Tom Carvalho has been appointed managing director of its San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland offices.

Carvalho, who joined the company in 2011, will report to senior vice president for the Western US, Rich Gobler.

This appointment comes as the San Francisco office experiences growth, with a 40% year-to-date increase in territory bookings, far outpacing the company’s nationwide growth rate of 20%. The San Francisco location is therefore in the running to become one of the company’s largest and fastest-growing offices.

“Throughout his nearly 15-year career at Burns & Wilcox, Tom has been instrumental in our success, both as a top producer and now serving in a leadership capacity,” shared by Gobler. “He’s the consummate team player who is a consistent champion of our culture. Under Tom, our teams will continue thriving as some of the most productive across the company.”

The San Diego State University alumnus started as an associate underwriter at Burns & Wilcox and eventually became a personal lines expert. Burns & Wilcox’s new managing director for the region is renowned for delivering strong results, the company said, bagging multiple production awards, and eventually bringing him recognition as the Burns & Wilcox Personal Insurance Underwriter of the Year Award in 2020.

“It is a privilege to step into this expanded role and oversee such an important team for Burns & Wilcox,” Carvalho said. “My sincere appreciation to Rich Gobler, along with Danny Kaufman, for this opportunity. As a family owned and operated organization with extensive expertise and deep relationships, Burns & Wilcox is uniquely positioned to succeed in this marketplace. We have the right team in place to continue winning.”
