BSI reaches new heights with new modern slavery standard
A modern slavery standard has been created by the British Standards Institution (BSI) which has published a pioneering national standard, giving organisations guidance about how to manage modern slavery risks in their operations, supply chains and wider operating environment. Globally, it is estimated that there are more than 40 million men, women and children in situations of modern slavery. These victims are forced to work for little or no pay, deprived of their freedom and often subjected to huge suffering. Both the COVID-19 pandemic and recent war in Europe have only exacerbated the issue – leaving thousands of people at risk from modern slavery.
BSI, as the National Standards Body in the UK, plays a vital role in helping businesses to adopt best practices and align with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. British Standard BS 25700 Organizational responses to modern slavery provides guidance on managing the risk of modern slavery, through prevention, identification, response, remediation, mitigation, and reporting modern slavery in operations and supply chains. The standard is free to download here.
The BSI is keen to gather feedback on its new standard to ensure it meets organisations’ requirements and to help inform its proposal to take this British standard into International Organization for Standardization. Members with any comments on the standard or who would like to act as an early adopter, and to help create case studies on how the standard is being used, are invited to contact BSI. Comments on the standard should made on the form.
BIBA members’ compliance and regulation queries should be directed to: compliance@biba.org.uk quoting their membership number.
