Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has announced the promotion of James Byrnes to head of construction professional for North America. He is based in New York.

Byrnes previously served as vice president of construction professional for BHSI’s US Eastern Region.

“James has played a critical role in building our construction professional business in North America,” said John Roe, head of casualty construction for North America at BHSI. “In his new role, he will lead our efforts to take our flourishing construction professional business to the next level and bring the certainty of BHSI’s financial strength, underwriting acumen, and ‘claims is our product’ philosophy to construction firms and contractors across the region.”

Byrnes has nearly 20 years of industry experience. Prior to joining BHSI, he spent more than a decade with another global insurer, working on both the underwriting and claims sides of the business.

Byrnes has also worked as an attorney and a civil engineer. He holds a law degree from Saint John’s University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University.

Byrnes’ appointment is the latest promotion at BHSI. In December, the company announced several promotions in its North America property team and two promotions in its US executive and professional lines team.
