Arbol hires ILS-experienced lawyer Matthew Gabin
Arbol, a technology-led underwriter of parametric risk transfer, climate and weather insurance or reinsurance business, has hired experienced ILS lawyer Matthew Gabin as its Chief Legal Officer and Deputy Chief Operating Officer.
Recently, Gabin has been working at global reinsurance firm Swiss Re, where as legal counsel he’s had a focus on parametric risk transfer, weather derivatives and also insurance-linked securities (ILS) structures, working for the weather and commodity business at the reinsurer.
Gabin joins Arbol to take over and further build out its legal and compliance team, also helping to oversee Arbol’s operational functions as the company continues to expand globally.
“We are excited to welcome a colleague who has such relevant experience advising some of the world’s leading reinsurers on parametric risk transfer, weather risk and other areas so close to our core business,” explained Sid Jha, founder and CEO of Arbol.
“As we continue to grow and expand our business into new verticals and markets, Matthew and his very specific expertise will be critical to our success.”
Gabin has spent over four years at Swiss Re, prior to which he worked at law firm Mayer Brown in New York, advising re/insurance companies, banks and ILS hedge funds that were structuring investments in insurance risk, using both capital markets and insurance structures for execution.
Before his time at the law firm, Gabin spent almost a decade at Allianz Risk Transfer as its North American Counsel, where he also had a focus on reinsurance convergence and assisted in the development of the ART fronting for ILS business.
“Parametric insurance is an indispensable tool for boosting resilience and closing the protection gap, and I’m thrilled to join a team that is driving innovation in the space,” Gabin said.
Adding that, “Arbol has achieved a lot in a short period of time and is positioning itself as a leader in parametric insurance and climate risk solutions for businesses globally. I look forward to putting my skills to work to help Arbol reinvent the way the world manages climate risk.”
Earlier this quarter, in October, Arbol hired Brad Livingston, an executive with significant insurance-linked securities (ILS) market experience, as its new Head of Risk Capital Solutions.
