AIA New Zealand has updated its health insurance policies to now cover prophylactic surgeries for policyholders following a successful cancer claim.

Prophylactic surgery coverage

Under the new policy, individuals who have submitted a valid claim for breast or ovarian cancer can access coverage for preventive surgeries, including mastectomy or oophorectomy. This coverage is subject to specific conditions, notably the detection of a BRCA gene mutation post-policy inception, which significantly elevates the risk of developing cancer.

AIA NZ acting chief product and investments officer Nick Sutherland noted the importance of preventive surgery in decreasing the likelihood of future cancer diagnoses.

“We’ve made these changes in recognition that preventative surgery is often medically recommended for these customers to reduce their risk of subsequent cancer events, so they can have greater peace of mind and go on to live a healthier, longer, better life,” he said.

AIA NZ customer feedback

This move to incorporate prophylactic surgery benefits marks a departure from AIA NZ’s previous stance, which excluded all forms of cancer-related preventive treatment.

The decision was influenced by feedback from customers, highlighting a gap in support for those considering preventive measures after a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis.

The extension of this coverage to include AIA NZ’s current and some previously closed health insurance products demonstrates a broader effort to enhance the value and comprehensiveness of its health insurance portfolio, the company said.
