Certain insurance companies have again been targeted by activist groups that are demanding that the insurers rule out covering the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), and the campaigners promise to keep on protesting until their demands are met.

During Wednesday’s protest in the UK, activists (pictured) from Money Rebellion, Coal Action Network, Stop Eacop, Extinction Rebellion, Stop Rosebank, and Just Stop Oil ‘visited’ the offices of Chubb, Travelers Syndicate Management, Lancashire Syndicates, Chaucer Syndicates, Talbot Underwriting, Liberty Managing Agency, Hiscox Syndicates, AIG, and Tokio Marine Kiln Syndicates.

Joined by the Oil Slick performers, the groups spilled oil outside the premises to represent what they described as “inevitable” oil leaks along the EACOP route. Proposed to be more than 1,400 kilometres long, the planned pipeline is aimed at transporting oil from Uganda to Tanzania.

In a release sent to Insurance Business, the protesters cited a Ugandan student as saying: “We stand in solidarity. These companies must rule out insuring EACOP.

“Why stand on the wrong side of history? Why do you want to destroy the planet? Can you respect the millions of Ugandans? This is our demand: drop this project now.”

Meanwhile Coal Action Network’s Lucy Porter said: “We already see climate chaos happening now, and the last thing the world needs is another 34 million tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions every year. End fossil fuels – don’t insure EACOP.”
