ACIL appoints veteran insurance broker to board

The Australian Consumers Insurance Lobby Inc (ACIL) has announced the appointment of John Devaney, a retired insurance broker from North Queensland, to its board during its annual general meeting on June 27.

Devaney, whose career in general insurance exceeds five decades, has been influential in providing input to the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) regarding the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool, leveraging his experience as a member of the North Queensland community committee.

“I’m delighted and privileged to join ACIL colleagues in our advocacy on behalf of consumers,” Devaney said. “The experience of North Australians with cyclones [and] the exposures faced by Strata insurance consumers across Australia are the proverbial canaries in the coal mine. Insurers and governments benefit by listening to the ACIL voice. In my view, they actually need us as we help them understand and perhaps improve some of their decision making’s impact on consumers.”

“The addition of John Devaney to our board is a testament to our organisation’s commitment to achieving better outcomes for insurance consumers in Northern Australia,” said ACIL chairperson Tyrone Shandiman. “I have had the pleasure of working with John in the past, and his presence on the board is a valuable addition.

“I also extend my heartfelt thanks to Dawn Romanella, who stepped down at the AGM, for her passionate advocacy on insurance issues affecting Northern Australia, particularly those impacting marinas.”

ACIL’s focus areas for 2025

During the AGM, ACIL also reaffirmed its focus areas for the upcoming year, noting significant advancements in several key consumer issues:

Stamp Duty Reform
Expert Report Issues
Market Failures

ACIL has also been calling for major reforms to the General Insurance Code of Conduct amid growing consumer dissatisfaction and industry-wide issues. It claimed that the current code of conduct has numerous weaknesses that insurance companies have taken advantage of, resulting in insufficient consumer protection during critical times.
