Accuro hit by cyberattack

New Zealand health insurer Accuro has been hit by a cyberattack that has compromised its access to several of its core systems. The insurer said it has yet to determine whether its customers’ data has been exposed in the breach.

“At this stage, we have no evidence that any Accuro data has been compromised, but we cannot rule out this possibility,” the insurer said. “Our current focus is working with our IT provider to investigate and understand the situation further. As we know more, we will continue to communicate directly with our members and have set up this information page to provide regular updates. For the time being, our systems remain offline, which will impact services, and we request your patience as we work towards a solution.”

Accuro also said that its IT provider is working with other experts and government agencies to determine the scope and impact of the breach. The company has notified the relevant regulatory authorities, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and CERT NZ.

“Accuro takes its obligations to protect the privacy and confidentiality of our members’ personal information very seriously,” it said.

The cyberattack on Accuro comes just a few weeks after hackers targeted Medibank, one of the largest private health insurers in Australia. New Zealand healthcare provider Pinnacle Health was also hit by an attack in September, with data of around 450,000 patients stolen and later leaked online.
