Where one goes to college can have a significant impact on their future earnings, with some institutions recognized for their outsize contribution of future billionaires. But few individuals make their college selection based on such a statistic; more likely they’re looking at the academic programs related to their field of study, the campus amenities, extracurriculars or student life.

For its best college rankings for 2023, the Princeton Review fielded an 85-question survey that asked 160,000 students at 388 colleges to rate professors, administrators, school services and other aspects of life at their institutions and to report on their campus and community experiences.

Students rated each question on a five-point scale — e.g., from strongly agree to strongly disagree; excellent to poor. Using these scores, computed out to several percentage points, researchers were able to tally the ranked lists.

Schools that made it onto any of the review’s 50 top 25 lists were those at which the surveyed students (as a group) indicated a very high consensus of opinion about that topic.
