This motor vehicle brand created Rivian car insurance company to provide the electric car owners with specialized, more affordable policies

Rivian car insurance company was formed in 2021 to prevent owners of Rivian vehicles from receiving higher than average car insurance rates.

What is Rivian car insurance company?

Rivian is a new electric-vehicle company that sells state-of-the-art SUVs and trucks with impressive off-roading capabilities and a focus on sustainable manufacturing.

To prevent owners of these new vehicles from receiving higher than average car insurance rates, Rivian partnered with Nationwide auto insurance company and The Cincinnati insurance brand to offer specialized policies that include off-road coverage.

Currently, Rivian only sells the R1T truck and the R1S SUV, both fully electric vehicles that drive further on a single charge than any other electric car currently on the market.

But to buy Rivian car insurance, you must own at least one Rivian-branded vehicle.

Despite partnering with Nationwide and The Cincinnati, Rivian Insurance Services LLC. is a separate entity.

You work with Rivian agents and use a specific Rivian-branded mobile app to pay bills, file claims, and more.

Rivian’s mission statement is to preserve the natural world forever. This company prioritizes sustainability as well as adventuring.

So all Rivian insurance policies include coverage for Rivian-branded parts and off-road protection.

All Rivian vehicles also include a comprehensive connected vehicle platform that tracks and evaluates your driving patterns.

In addition, it offers you data-driven coverage using telematics technology, leading to potential discounts and more.

At this time, Rivian insurance is available in 48 states with plans to expand to the rest of the country soon. Right now, you also get free access to a Rivian Membership. However, a fee may apply in the future.

With a Rivian Membership, you get something called off-roadside assistance. For example, Rivian technicians will help retrieve your vehicle if it gets stuck while you’re out adventuring.

Alternatively, if you run out of charge, you’ll get free towing services to the nearest charging station.

While this is an excellent customer benefit, it’s technically not part of your Rivian car insurance policy.

However, you can purchase all traditional car insurance coverages from Rivian, including liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage.

Plus, personal injury protection (PIP), medical payments (MedPay) coverage, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage are also available in select states.

How do you get Rivian car insurance quotes?

To request Rivian car insurance quotes, you must purchase a Rivian vehicle. You have the option to add the insurance while buying either the R1S or R1T.

However, you can also contact a Rivian representative over the phone. Licensed Rivian insurance agents are available on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. central time.

Unfortunately, there is no online quote tool on the actual company website. Plus, if you do not own a Rivian vehicle, you cannot buy Rivian car insurance.

However, as long as you insure either the R1S or R1T, you may add additional cars from other manufacturers to your Rivian policy.

What are the average Rivian car insurance rates?

Rivian car insurance rates are not publicly available at this time. But similar electric cars typically cost $225 per month or $2,700 annually to insure.

However, if you request a quote, you can compare it to the national average cost of car insurance.

According to some sources, car insurance in 2018 cost around $99.16 per month or $1,190 annually.

Keep in mind that many different factors impact your car insurance rates, including your age, driving record, ZIP code, and the make and model of the vehicle you drive.

So to secure your best possible coverage, compare quotes from multiple companies and choose the one most compatible with your needs.

How do you file a Rivian car insurance claim?

Rivian vehicles only started shipping out to customers for the first time towards the end of 2021, so not much is known about the claims process at this time.

That said, a claims center is available in the Rivian mobile app and software suite. You can also call a Rivian insurance representative over the phone during operational business hours for assistance.

Rivian also promises to use mechanics trained and familiar with Rivian parts to perform all vehicle repairs.

Plus, the company will install the most updated technology into your vehicle whenever necessary.

Fortunately, the two subsidiaries that help underwrite Rivian policies, Nationwide and The Cincinnati, both received primarily positive claims center reviews from real customers.

Ideally, the Rivian Insurance claims center will be just as efficient and effective as its partners.

Does Rivian offer car insurance discounts?

At this time, Rivian Insurance does not list any car insurance discounts on the company website. However, it claims that discounts are available to drivers, and those offers vary by state.

It also mentions that drivers may save up to 20% annually by bundling their home and car insurance policies in select states.

Plus, Rivian vehicles all come equipped with the Driver+ Highway Assist technology.

This is a hands-free driver assistance program that steers your car, adjusts the speed, and even changes highway lanes at your command.

You may save up to 15% on your Rivian car insurance policy by using this feature regularly.

For more information about what specific car insurance discounts are available from Rivian in the state where you live, contact a Rivian insurance representative.

What are the Rivian insurance ratings and reviews?

When shopping around for your best coverage, cheap car insurance rates are not the only thing to consider.

Looking at a company’s customer reviews and financial ratings also helps you determine if the company is reliable and efficient before you actually commit to purchasing a policy.

Unfortunately, Rivian Insurance is so new, and the company has not yet been rated by any of the leading credit rating agencies. It also has very few online customer reviews.

So instead, let’s look at reviews for Nationwide, one of the companies Rivian Insurance Services LLC. uses to underwrite policies.

Nationwide earned the following scores from the leading credit rating agencies:

A.M. Best: A+
Moody’s: A1
Standard & Poor’s: A+

Fortunately, these high scores imply that you can trust this company to follow through on any of its obligations to policyholders.

Nationwide also received a complaint index of 2.23, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The median is always set to 1.00, and lower scores are better.

While 2.23 means Nationwide received more customer complaints than the median, the number is not concerningly high.

Remember to keep these ratings and reviews in mind while you shop around and compare quotes to find your best possible coverage.

What vehicles does Rivian sell?

Currently, Rivian sells two fully electric vehicles, the R1T truck and the R1S SUV. Three equipment packages are also now available. However, one is limited to the company’s launch.

Because Rivian is committed to sustainability and adventuring, all vehicle interiors are made with recyclable, animal-free materials.

The batteries in the truck and SUV are also designed to be easily removable and partially recyclable at the end of the vehicle’s life.

Plus, these state-of-the-art electric cars drive further on a single battery charge than any other electric car currently on the market.

Take a look at the table below to compare more specifications for both the R1T and R1S.

Interestingly, some variables do impact the efficiency of the range of these vehicles.

For example, both the truck and SUV see a 10% to 15% range reduction with 20-inch wheels and a 5% to 10% reduction with 22-inch wheels.

Plus, all vehicles manufactured by Rivian include the Driver+ Highway Assist software.

This hands-free program uses 12 ultrasonic sensors, five radars, and 11 additional sensors to create a clear field of vision around your entire vehicle.

Later down the line, Rivian plans on releasing another truck that reaches 250 miles on a battery charge and another that may get up to 400 miles.

Plus, an SUV that reaches 250 miles on a single battery charge is also in the works.

Does Rivian offer any other insurance products?

According to the Rivian website, this company does offer additional insurance coverages to customers. Those products include boat, home, campers, and other vehicle insurance.

However, product availability varies by state. These insurance services are also underwritten by Nationwide or The Cincinnati or other subsidiaries of the two brands.

For more details about what additional insurance products are available through Rivian where you live, contact a licensed Rivian insurance agent.

What is the history of Rivian?

Rivian Insurance has a short but interesting history. The company was created in 2021 as a way to prevent Rivian vehicle owners from receiving higher-than-average car insurance quotes. This is a problem many Tesla drivers also experienced.

However, while Tesla created an in-house insurance company from scratch, Rivian collaborated with already-established companies to quickly provide coverage options.

So while Tesla Insurance is only available in California and Texas, Rivian’s partnership with Nationwide and The Cincinnati means the company is already available in the 48 continental states.

However, unlike traditional insurance policies, Rivian car insurance policies all include off-road coverage and replacement costs for specific Rivian-branded parts.

The goal is to integrate the insurance services with Rivian vehicle ownership seamlessly. So now, when customers go to purchase a Rivian car, they can also add coverage from Rivian Insurance.

Rivian, the motor vehicle brand, actually started back in 2009. But CEO Robert Scaringe purposefully kept the brand out of the public eye for a handful of years while raising money for the start-up.

Scaringe wanted to do for trucks what Tesla did for luxury vehicles. But before ever producing a single prototype, he managed to raise $1.7 billion for Rivian.

He then secured additional investments from large companies like Amazon and Ford Motor.

In 2017, the company finally acquired a retired Mitsubishi manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, and produced the first-ever alpha prototypes of the R1T truck.

Today, some Rivian owners are still waiting to receive their trucks and SUVs. The first delivery of the vehicles happened towards the end of 2021, with more roll-outs happening in 2022.

Rivian Car Insurance: The Bottom Line

Rivian Insurance Services, LLC was explicitly made with Rivian owners in mind. So if you purchase one of these state-of-the-art vehicles, consider looking into the insurance offerings as well.

The insurance services truly integrate seamlessly with your Rivian ownership, and you’ll also receive cheaper coverage that includes off-roading protection and pays for specialty Rivian-branded parts and trained mechanics.

However, if you do not own one of these vehicles, you cannot purchase Rivian Insurance and must look elsewhere for coverage.

Fortunately, plenty of the other best car insurance companies offer affordable rates, even for electric vehicles.
