Nicotine Question – Life Insurance Application & Medical Exam
Hi All,
I've recently applied for Life Insurance, and on the questionnaire I was truthful about my tobacco use at the time:
– Smoke a couple of cigars a year
– Some habitual use in the past 5 years with nicotine pouches
Since applying about a month ago, I essentially fell off the wagon (I know, stupid), and started using nicotine pouches again after a weekend trip with some friends. The company reached out today to schedule my medical exam, and I realized I kind of put myself in a bind.
In my mind the logical option to me is to call the company, explain that I need to update answers to those questions, essentially try to preemptively get ahead of what I'm assuming is going to be a positive nicotine result on the test.
Is that the best option? Is that even possible? Or would it be better to take the test, and explain after the fact?
I understand I may get dinged with a smokers rate, but I'd rather that be the case than get denied all together.
I appreciate any insight, or past experiences as I'm just trying to figure out the best path forwards!
