My ex-stepfather fighting me for my mother life insurance

Hello,

My mother and step father divorced in 2015. My mother sadly passed away from cancer in early 2022. After a long wait I finally submitted all the paper work to the life insurance company. I ended up finding out that I was initially the secondary beneficiary as my mother failed to remove her ex husband as the primary. The company initially told me all I needed to do was submit the divorce decree. Months later they sent me a withdrawal of claim form (without explanation).

Long story short after making numerous phone calls they told me I need to have my mom’s ex husband sign the withdrawal of claim form or I will have to take him to court. The manager I spoke with me assured me since I was my mom’s biological son and she divorced him that Ultimately I will receive the pay out.

I’m feeling extremely sad and betrayed about this as this man raised me and I considered him to be my father.

Has anyone been through this? Is there anything I should know? Do you have advice?

Also the divorce took place in Oklahoma.

Thanks in advance!
