Okay, so my FIL started battling what we now know was brain cancer the middle of last year. He’s had a policy through his work, with MetLife, for years. (He been with the company decades) It is one of those your salary for a year, or $$$ or whatever is lesser and then you can choose to multiply it. Before his first surgery, he told us about it if anything happened. Which was August of last year. In October/November he was in rehab, and then continued to go downhill till March when they finally agreed on another biopsy that confirmed cancer. He passed in September. We filed the documents and all that and they came back saying that he only had the standard policy. No multiplier because he didn’t finish submitting his paperwork during open enrollment right after his first surgery, and therefore, the life insurance defaults to the basic coverage through work.

My question is, is there anything we can do about this? He’s paid on those multipliers for years. Like decades. And during that time, he was on disability, going through surgeries, and then put on LTD by February. There is a trail record of his struggles through the last year. Maybe that’s life insurance and I don’t understand, but it seems crazy to pay on something like that for decades and then not have it when you need it because a form wasn’t submitted while he was struggling. Any advice?
