Life Insurance lapse.. What next?
My mother has had a $1m life insurance policy for awhile, and I just found out that she stopped paying into it 3mo ago.
For context, she is 52 and in very poor health. It’s unfortunate, but we have not had an easy relationship since my dad died. Me and my 3 siblings are the listed beneficiaries.
About a year and a half ago, she asked me to buy a house with her money (at the time she had $300k) but under my name. I was happy to help but asked to see her finances first and she refused and got my sister to do it for her. She bought the house and somehow ran through the rest of her liquid cash in the last year and a half. My brother has since moved in with her and things are really not good between them. I’ve tried to help but there’s really nothing I can do for either of them, both financially or emotionally.
Apparently, she asked my brother to begin covering the policy payments this summer and he refused. I would’ve taken the payments over without a second thought, but since I said no to the house, she hasn’t reached out to me much except when things get really bad with her and my brother.
I understand if this all seems kind of crass… and yes, I am concerned about “my” money but also for my sister who is on the hook for this mortgage and my other brother. Long story short, she spent $2m of our dad’s money after he died on her new husband’s motorcycle collection and vacations for the two of them and has never worked a day of her life. So if this means that money is gone, it’s a definite gut punch. Like I mentioned above, she is in extremely poor health so if they do a medical evaluation there is no way she will get near the benefit that she had before. What can I do?
