Father claims that our mothers life insurance company accidentally wrote the check in his name

My mother passed away in 2020 when I (F21) was 17. About a half year after she passed, my siblings and I asked my father (my siblings are half-siblings, and I am the only child that is from both my father and mother) about her life insurance that he swore up and down was in her children's name, not his. When it was finally time to get the money, he claimed that the company accidentally wrote the check in his name and therefore he would write us each a check for however much money was supposed to be given to us. We never saw the life insurance check though, we believed him

After a few years, lots of lies that my father has told about my mother's money and her assets have been revealed and my siblings and I are going through lengthy legal battles. We are starting to look back at the conversations we had and trying to make sense of some of the things we were told, but the life insurance is something that still puzzles us.

At the time, we had no idea how life insurance worked after the person passed away, so we believed that the check could be accidentally written in his name. There was no reason to disbelieve my father and we had no room to question him while also dealing with our immense grief. Now that we have some clarity, we aren't so sure that was the truth. We are still trying to find out which company our mother had her life insurance with, but we haven't had any luck.

So I guess what I'm asking is, is this possible? Can a life insurance company accidentally write out the check to the deceased’s spouse instead of the people on the policy? Is there a way we can find out what company my mother had her life insurance with in order to get answers? Thank you for any and all help!
