Executor of the estate and did not get paid

Long story short, my mom passed away 2 weeks ago. She named me as the executor of her estate.

Digging through her paperwork I found $100,000 life insurance policy that listed myself, my brother, and both her grandchildren split into 1/4 as beneficiaries.

Filled out all the forms at the funeral home. They were taking their cut off the top of the life insurance, and the rest was to be distributed between the 4 of us.

Today comes, I get an email from the life insurance company that says you are not listed a beneficiary. Everyone else got $30,000 checks today. Me, as the executor, doing all the work and paying her bills, got nothing.

Since the county doesn’t have the paperwork yet, I’m not officially listed as the executor yet. So life insurance company could not tell mr any information. The estate attorney is understaffed, so probably a few weeks before that ever gets complete.

In the meantime, my brother and his daughter live out of state. Haven’t been around in years. Didn’t take care of her when she was ill. They have their $30,000 checks.

All insurance papers we found listed all 4 of us as beneficiaries. I guess the question I need to find out is, did my mom change that and when did she do it? Was she in her right state of mind when she did it?

She was in the hospital for months with pneumonia, hospital delirium, COPD. I provided 24/7 home care for her along with my son, just to keep her out of a nursing home.

So I have doing all the work, paying to keep the lights and water on at her house, while my out of state brother who hasn’t talked to her in years got a $30,000 check today. Everyone did. Except me.

I’m angry, my heart is broken. My mom took care of everything when my dad died, this is all new to me.

Anyone have any useful information for me?
