Do you pay More for Life Insurance if You’re Coeliac?

Life Insurance Exclusions – What’s Not Covered By Life Insurance Policies?

coliac disease and life insurance

Dear sirs, I was recently diagnosed with coeliac disease (in the last six months). We’re in the middle of buying a house; from reading online, it looks like I won’t be able to get cover. Is this true? I’d be devastated if it was. Thanks in advance.Rachael

Applying for Life Insurance with Coeliac Disease

Rachael is correct.

Most insurance companies won’t offer cover if you have been diagnosed in the last six months.

But we managed to arrange cover for Rachael (she sent the above email a few months back!).

It helped that she had no other health issues and a supportive letter from her consultant.

But it can be a challenge to get life insurance for a new diagnosis of coeliac disease.

Luckily you’ve come to the right place.

We specialise in arranging cover for more complex life insurance applications.

Can you get Mortgage Protection with Coeliac Disease?

Yes, most applicants will be able to get the normal price for life insurance with coeliac disease.

If your diagnosis was over 6 months ago and it’s under control, there shouldn’t be any problem.

But if your diagnosis:

In the last 6 months, or if there is poor control
or any complications,

you should speak with a specialist life insurance advisor to help you get the best cover.

How much will Life Insurance with Coeliac Disease cost?

The best-case scenario is getting the same price as someone without coeliac disease assuming your condition is under control by diet and there are no complications.

You can get an indicative life insurance quote here

If there are complications, underwriting will decide how much you will pay.

What information will the insurer need from Coeliac patients?

Age at diagnosis
Date of last symptoms
Any anaemia or GI symptoms
Results of all investigations

You’ll need to complete a questionnaire.

If you give detailed answers, there will be no need for a medical report from your GP.

What about serious illness cover and income protection with Coeliac Disease?

You’ll get the normal price if your condition is under control with no complications.

Otherwise, it will depend on the severity of the complications.

Over to you…

As long as you are sticking to a gluten-free diet and there are no complications, you’ll get the normal price.

However, if an insurer increases your premium because of coeliac disease, you should look elsewhere.

But if there have been complications, take advice from a life insurance specialist before applying.
