Denied spousal life insurance coverage through husband’s employer due to “medical history” of alcohol abuse because of isolated incident

I am a health 28 year old married woman with a healthy relationship to alcohol (maybe 1-2 drinks per week, if that, socially). When I was 22, I went to the hospital one night after drinking too much because I was throwing up. This was an isolated incident where I went overboard with a friend one night. They gave me an IV and I went home.

6 years later, my husband applied for spousal life insurance for me. I just got a letter denying coverage because of this hospital visit, saying I had a “medical history of alcohol abuse”. I honestly forgot this happened so I didn’t list it in my application. My medical history certainly includes regular visits to my primary care / other docs where they’ve definitely recorded my (honest) answers about having about 1-2 drinks per week.

The letter says I was denied because this plan doesn’t allow riders / increased premiums, etc. They said I had to contest the info first with Intelliscript and then the company (securian / Minnesota).

Is there anything I can do? This feels wrong, but I also feel a bit powerless in this situation. Would love any advice. Thank you.
