Cope steps away after nearly four decades in insurance - The Andalusia Star-News - Andalusia Star-News

Lucky Cope followed in his father’s footsteps and retired following a 38-year insurance career, which included the last 13 years with Alfa Insurance in Opp.

“I got laid off from the oil rigs in August 1984. My dad, Charley Cope, was in the insurance business, and I started in October 1984 with Liberty National. I started with Alfa Insurance on July 1, 2009. My retirement goal was to retire when I qualified for full benefits from Social Security, so Feb. 1, 2022, was the date.”

Cope added that he would miss his coworkers and members the most. “I will miss the relationships I have formed with the office staff and customers.”

Instead of choosing to rest and relax in his retirement, he will be going in a different direction. Cope will be working with the Andalusia football team and helping with the school’s strength and conditioning program. “My retirement plans are to stay active. I want to get some home projects done and hopefully help Andalusia High School get another state championship.”

Working for Alfa Insurance was unique in one aspect, and he embraced that with open arms. Having the opportunity to serve customers was something he took pride in each time he met with individuals.

“Alfa is a very family-driven company from the president to the newest rookie. Everyone is on a first-name basis. The company always starts every meeting with prayer. There are not many businesses that can say that. I have loved the interaction with the customers. You never want to see someone have a claim, but when they do and we can step up to help, that’s a great feeling,” he said.

Cope felt one thing proved to be the biggest change from the start of his career until the end. “Just like all businesses, the technology has come a long way. I never imagined a day when I could do a life insurance application for a customer online and not witness his or her signature in person.”

He was grateful for the opportunity to work with the general public and meet their insurance needs.

“This career choice has allowed me to meet people from all walks of life. They all have specific needs that need protecting. I have enjoyed the challenge of figuring that out and helping them.”

Cope’s final day at the Alfa Insurance location in Opp was Monday, Jan. 31.

Having the support of his family and coworkers left a huge impact on his life.

“You cannot do this job with a very supportive family. There are times you must work late, go out odd hours, and more. The office staff is also very important. You cannot enjoy success without them.”

He offered some advice to someone new to the insurance industry. “The insurance career is very rewarding, and I would recommend it. Just work hard and always be honest with your customers,” Cope said.

He and his wife, Felicia Cope, have been married 39 years and will celebrate their fortieth anniversary in August. They have two children, Joe (Katherine) and Bricken (Fleming) as well as five grandchildren: Joseph, Drennan, Charlie, Mary Alice, and Samuel.

“Lucky was a great agent. He always helped his customers in any way he could. He will be missed. His replacement has some very big shoes to fill,” Alfa Insurance Team Leader Cindy Worley said.
