Depending on where a homeowner lives, property taxes can range from 0.29% in the least expensive state to 8.5 times that much in the most expensive one, according to a recent report from WalletHub.

To find out where residents bear the heaviest property tax burden, WalletHub examined real estate tax data from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

For purposes of comparison, researchers divided the median real estate tax payment by the median home price in each state, then used the resulting rates to calculate the dollar amount paid as real estate tax on a house worth $244,900, the median value for a home in the U.S. as of 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In addition, they compared the taxes paid on the cost of a median-priced home in each state or district. In our gallery, we used this figure to break ties. Notably, while Hawaii has the nation’s lowest property tax rate (0.29%), it also has the highest median home value ($662,100). The tax bill on a median-priced home, $1,893, is the 20th highest in the U.S.

See the gallery for the 13 states with the highest property tax rates, according to WalletHub.
