Physical and mental health are beneficial to an individual’s financial life, as one’s health status can significantly affect outlays for health-care-related expenses, especially as people age.

Poor health can derail even the best-laid financial goals and reduce overall quality of individuals and their families, SmartAsset noted in a new study.

Factors that influence people’s health status differ across the country. SmartAsset ranked 100 of the biggest U.S. cities, using data from the 2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps report.

Researchers based rankings on 10 metrics, including average number of physically and mentally unhealthy days in the past month; percentage of adults who smoke and who report binge or heavy drinking; percentage of adults who are obese and those who report no leisure time for physical activity; drug overdose deaths; air pollution; adults diagnosed with diabetes; and percentage of adults who average fewer than seven hours of sleep.

See the accompanying gallery for the 12 healthiest large cities in the United States, according to SmartAsset.
