What’s The Best Entry-Level Sports Car You Can Buy Right Now?

What if today, the answer wasn’t Miata? Photo: Mazda

I’ll be the first to admit that I love a ridiculous supercar. There’s something joyous about the roaring V12 you hear from an Aston Martin or the over the top stylings of an immaculate Lamborghini. But that doesn’t mean that all the fun is reserved for the super-rich, you can have a lot of laughs in a humble sports car as well.

So, with this in mind, we want to find out what the best entry-level sports car is that you can buy right now? Sure, the answer is probably the Mazda Miata, but what if today the answer was something other than Miata? If you think so, we want to know!

Maybe you think that the ultimate choice for attainable performance is the Porsche Cayman with its slick styling, four-cylinder motor and crisp handling, and that would make it a good choice. But it also costs more than $60,000 and is getting on a bit, so does it count?

Alternatively, the Toyobaru siblings are another potential suggestion thanks, again to their fun handling and decent looks. Maybe that’s actually the best entry-level sports car out there? That’s before you’ve even thought about the bargains you could pick up second hand, like an old Camaro. Or even what you could choose if you’re prepared to build something yourself, as you might have to if you want a Caterham here in the U.S.

But what cars would you put forward for this list? Head to the comments section below to let us know the models that you think can be considered the greatest entry-level sports cars that you can buy right now. We’ll put together some of the best responses in a slideshow next week. And, of course, if someone does suggest Miata then it’s obviously well deserving of a spot on this list.
