Volvo's New Flagship EX90 EV Starts Just Under $80,000
Volvo has released pricing for its next EV, the 2024 EX90 SUV that will take the place of the gas-powered XC90 in the lineup. While it’s not cheap, its $77,990 starting price — which includes the $1,295 destination charge — undercuts many competitors and isn’t that much more than the existing XC90 plug-in hybrid.

Buyers of the EX90 will get to choose between Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance powertrain setups. While all EX90 models get the same 111-kWh battery pack, power output differs. Twin Motor EX90s get 402 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque while the Twin Motor Performance puts out 496 hp and 671 lb-ft. EPA estimates are still unknown, but Volvo says you can expect 300 miles of range for the Twin Motor. Range for the Performance version has yet to be announced.

Starting out the lineup is the Twin Motor Plus with a seven-seat configuration, which starts at the aforementioned $77,990; opt for a six-seat layout and it’ll cost you $78,490. That gets you standard features like 20-inch wheels, Volvo’s signature Thor’s hammer LED lights, a massive 14.5-inch touchscreen, and all of Volvo’s safety and driver-assist tech. The Twin Motor Ultra starts at $82,340 for the six-seater or $82,840 with seven seats, adding 21-inch wheels, air suspension, massaging front seats, laminated glass, soft-close doors and puddle lights.
The Twin Motor Performance Plus trim starts at $82,990 with seven seats or $83,490 with six seats, while the Twin Motor Performance Ultra starts at $87,340 for the seven seater and $87,840 for the six seater. Since the EX90 seems as if it comes pretty loaded, other add-ons are few. There are only five major options: one 21-inch wheel only available on Plus trims for $800, two 22-inch wheel options (one for Plus and one for Ultra trims) for $800 or $1,100, a wool seating option for no cost on the Ultra, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system for $3,200 on the Ultra.

While pricing for the EX90 isn’t cheap, it costs much less than similar competitors. Its starting price comes in just under the $78,000 Rivian R1S with its standard range battery pack. The EX90 is also $1,060 less than the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV ($79,050), nearly $28,000 less than the Mercedes EQS SUV ($105,550), and $10,105 less than the BMW iX ($88,095). The only competitor that has a cheaper starting price is Audi’s Q8 E-Tron which starts at $75,595, and the Audi, the BMW, and the Mercedes EQE all don’t offer a third row of seating.
If you’re interested, you can pre-order the EX90 now. Volvo is set to start production at its South Carolina facility in Q1 2024, and the EX90 will hit dealers in the middle of the year.
