Designer Sangyup Lee says the rear spoiler was essential for the Ioniq 6 to achieve its slippery 0.21 coefficient of drag. “The top is the critical one,” he adds. “The second helps with lift but also styling.”
Lee wanted to maintain the single line and curvature of the roof. “Keeping the form simpler is a way to make the car ageless,” he says.
The dark underbody draws the eye. Lee says this was a way to visually reduce volume since the car grew in height from the Prophecy concept.
The pixel is the key Ioniq design element. It’s on the front end, steering wheel, rear light bar, and rear spoiler decklid.
Hyundai’s chairman asked the designers to try something different with the steering wheel. Instead of placing a logo—almost a default practice—they added a light indicator to the wheel to signal charge level.
