Having debuted for 2014, the Lamborghini Huracán has seemingly been around for ages. But that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t constantly evolved over the years. The newest version, the Tecnica, slots below the hard-edged STO model and in many ways is the perfect mix of track-day ferocity and roadgoing civility.

Positioned between the rear-wheel-drive Huracán Evo and the range-topping STO in the Huracán hierarchy, the Tecnica is intended to be used on both the road and the track.

Power comes from the 631-hp version of Lamborghini’s long-serving 5.2-liter V-10, same as the STO. Drive is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Rear-axle steering is standard, and the Tecnica gets a fixed-ratio steering rack rather than the variable-ratio system we haven’t always loved in previous examples of the Huracán.

U.S. sales begin later this year, with the Tecnica set to be the penultimate Huracán. We’re still expecting the release an off-road-oriented version inspired by the Sterrato concept.

Tecnica buyers will be able to choose track-focused options, including carbon-fiber door panels, a partial roll cage, and deep-shelled race seats.

Carbon-ceramic brakes will be standard on all versions of the Tecnica, and buyers will be able to upgrade to track-biased Bridgestone Potenza Race tires.

The Tecnica’s aerodynamic elements deliver around 400 pounds of downforce—more than the Huracán Evo but less than half of what the STO can generate.

Visual changes on the Tecnica include larger apertures in the front and rear bumpers, a new separate rear wing, and a carbon-fiber engine cover in place of the rear glass screen on lesser Huracáns. The side window profile has also been subtly tweaked.

The Huracán’s cabin still feels tight, with limited headroom for taller occupants, especially those wearing a helmet.
