The BMW iX uses two current-excited AC electric motors that do not require rare-earth permanent magnets, which can be difficult to source in an ethical manner.
The two motors give the AWD iX 516 horsepower, enough to send it from zero to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds.
A 105.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack makes it possible to travel an EPA estimated 305 to 324 miles between charges, depending on tire fitment.
Our test car rode on the optional 22-inch “Aero” wheels, whose pattern is designed to smooth airflow for reduced drag.
At a DC fast-charger, BMW says the iX can add 90 miles in 10 minutes or go from almost empty to an 80 percent charge in less than an hour.
We had some issues with the placement of the charge port. It’s a little too high and too far back on the car for easy plugging and disconnecting.
Whatever you think about the big Bimmer grille, the iX version uses a self-healing coating to prevent scratches and small rock chips.
We recommend springing for the $1150 Luxury package, which changes the controls from a brushed-metal finish to faceted glass.
Regenerative braking can be set to one of three levels or left in Adaptive mode, which offers more coasting on an open road and uses GPS data and sensors to increase regeneration while in traffic or at intersections.
If Coco Chanel said to take one accessory off before heading out, the iX said, “I won’t,” and it looks great anyhow—on the inside, at least.
