Texans Can Get A License Plate With A Cheeseburger On It

I’ve been a big fan of the custom license plate trend, where states, countries, or provinces offer a neat little design that’s supposed to convey the spirit of the region. Whether it’s the turquoise shade of New Mexico’s plates or the polar bear shape of plates for Canada’s Northern Territories, it’s a unique way to convey a little local spirit. That’s why here in Texas, you can get a burger on your license plate.

For the uninitiated, this Mighty Fine Burger plate is just one of Texas’ other fun designs. For the small fee of $90 per year, you can sport a custom plate featuring oil rigs, yellow roses, the iconic “come and take it” flag, ads for Texas citrus, and even a Remax-themed plate.

We have to give a shoutout to the Autopian for really drawing attention to how absurd the whole thing is; when I was looking at getting a novelty plate for my Suburban earlier this year, I don’t think that Mighty Fine Burger even registered in my brain.

Mighty Fine Burgers is an Austin-based burger joint with a handful of different locations and some diverse offerings that include the standard burger joint fare with a few surprises; the burger of this month, for example, is currently a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It even offers vegetarian options, like the fry burger — which is, quite literally, a bunch of crinkle-cut fries sandwiched between two buns. (I need one immediately.)

If you’ve got a business down here in Texas, you can pretty easily apply to have your own novelty plate; you just have to submit an application to the state.

But why would anyone even want a novelty license plate from an extremely regional burger joint? Mighty Fine Burgers offers a $150 gift card to anyone who gets its plate — and you can get a new gift card when you renew every year. All things considered, that’s a pretty sick deal.
