Teenager Catches Nearly 50 Driving-Related Charges On First Try

Marcellus Otero was arrested in Sydney, Australia on December 12 after crashing his silver Subaru BRZ during an alleged street race. The 19-year-old’s car was equipped with a dash cam, which police reviewed and found at least 48 separate offenses in November and December on the streets of Sydney. Otero stands accused of driving under a suspended provisional license, doing burnouts, driving negligently, recklessly, and furiously, as well as exceeding the speed limit by over 45 km/h (28 mph).

According to reports from the driver, the December 12 crash occurred when he swerved to avoid a driver pulling out of their driveway and hit a pole. Allegedly he was traveling at 130 km/h (81 mph) in a marked 60 km/h (37 mph) zone. It goes without saying that it’s really not smart to drive 81 miles per hour on a residential street, and it’s doubly not smart to street race. That’s not to say I wasn’t doing the same shit when I was a teenager, but it wasn’t smart then, and it’s not smart now. Following the accident, the teen was bruised and scratched, but otherwise unscathed.

Otero told reporters that he would be pleading guilty to some of the charges, but not all. “I’ve got to stop driving like an idiot,” he said. “I’m thankful I didn’t hit anyone or anyone got hurt.”

There are a few takeaways here. The most important one is that you probably shouldn’t drive like a moron, especially when you aren’t particularly good at it. The second lesson: don’t document your crimes on a dashcam for the police to use as hard evidence that you’ve been committing those crimes. That’s just, like, a rookie move.
