From the inconvenient race times to astronomical ticket prices, the dedication of the American Formula 1 fanbase knows no bounds. Vice President Kamala Harris counts herself among the millions waking up early to tune into the globe-trotting world championship. The Democratic nominee for President appeared on the Howard Stern Show this week, where the radio host asked about her love for F1.

Harris passionately answered, “We love it. Our whole family does.” He added, “It’s not a campaign thing?” The VP immediately replied, “No! God, no!” I can’t imagine a single circumstance where being a fan of a sport historically tied to wealthy playboys would ever be a tactic to win a national election. It’s clear that Harris has a genuine interest in F1, while Stern was wholly lost by the concept of racing itself. He had no clue who Lewis Hamilton was, Harris’ favorite driver and a seven-time world champion.

Harris noted, “Actually, I haven’t been able to watch it a lot recently because I am campaigning and also depending on where they’re driving.” F1’s races in Europe and Asia typically start around 9:00 a.m. in Washington, D.C. The perfect sport if you’re essentially working every day, but not so great if you’re constantly traveling ahead of the November election.

Former President Donald Trump had his own run-in with F1 earlier this year. The Republican nominee attempted to hold a fundraiser at the Miami Grand Prix in May before race organizers shut down the planned event. Trump still attended the race weekend as a guest of McLaren. Coincidently, Lando Norris won in South Florida, ending a three-year win drought for McLaren.
