EV-Swapped DeLorean Smokes Tesla Cybertruck On A Drag Strip

EV-Swapped DeLorean Smokes Tesla Cybertruck On A Drag Strip

The Tesla Cybertruck has a pretty distinctive angular, stainless steel design that’s drawn similarities between the divisive electric vehicle and everything from dumpsters to futuristic tanks, depending on who you ask. One car that definitely influenced the truck’s look was the DeLorean and now a shop in America has put the cult classic up against Tesla’s electric truck in a race.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Has Finally Arrived

Both the Cybertruck and the DeLorean that faced off are owned by Wisconsin-based workshop Hoffman Manufacturing Corp. This means that the truck is stock from Tesla, while the DeLorean has had a few upgrades made since it rolled off the factory floor in the 1980s.

Instead of the old PRV V6 monitor that the original came with, this DeLorean is electric. It’s been converted by Hoffman Manufacturing and now packs in a whole heap of tech from, you guessed it, Tesla. The 55kWh battery pack that’s now installed means the electric DeLorean can manage more than 200 miles of range, while the Model 3 Performance drive unit means the car can manage 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

In contrast, the Cybertruck has 123 kWh of battery power offering up more than 300 miles of range. The motors in the electric pickup kick out around 600 hp, which is enough to get the massive truck from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.9 seconds. So this race should be pretty close, right?

In a film of the race, Hoffman showed that it towed the DeLorean to the drag strip on the back of the Cybertruck, before prepping the two cars for the day of races. The first face-off was between a stock DeLorean and the electric model, which the EV won comfortably after running the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds compared with the original car’s 17-second-run.

Next, it was time to see how the restored classic compared with the car that towed it to the track. It was a pretty close race, with both cars storming off the line at an alarming pace. Things were pretty close by the halfway mark, and at the end of the quarter-mile run the two cars were still neck and neck.

It wasn’t the Cybertruck that came out on top, however, and instead the EV-swapped DeLorean won the race after finishing in 12.3 seconds and hitting a top speed of 108.5 mph. In contrast, the Cybertruck was clocked at 104 mph at the end of its 12.8 second run.
