2028 Subaru WRX STI

Overview

The STI badge has been MIA from Subaru’s WRX lineup ever since the current model skidded into the foreground covered in plastic cladding, but we’re not giving up hope that Subaru will revive the legendary high-performance nameplate. We don’t know much about what the next STI will include, but Subaru has said it is exploring electrification for a future model. That would likely mean some sort of Toyota system adopted for the STI, as the two companies have been collaborating on electrified vehicles lately. Whether that results in a hybrid or pure battery-electric powertrain remains to be seen, but we don’t expect to see a new STI until the current WRX generation is on the way out. That could bring us to nearly the end of the decade, so buckle in, we may be waiting a while.

What’s New for 2028?

The WRX STI EV will most likely be an all-new take on an old name when it launches for the next generation. The STI EV is expected to have an electrified powertrain, and we believe it’ll take at least 400 horsepower to be a worthy follow-on to the old gas-powered, rally-inspired models. If it turns out to be a pure-electric, that almost certainly means it will employ a dual-motor setup with all-wheel-drive and a torque-vectoring system. With all the changes happening, we would also love to see a return to the old WRX’s hatchback body style.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Premium

$50,000 (est)

Limited

$55,000 (est)

We estimate the WRX STI EV will start around $50,000 when it arrives at dealerships near the end of the decade, but it’s too soon to be sure given uncertainties and inflation. The last STI was offered in two trim levels, but we won’t have a clear picture of what will be available on the new version until closer to its eventual arrival.
