2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV
Overview
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is an all-electric reimagining of one of the most iconic, bad-ass off-road machines of the last century. While the Hummer brand now lives under the GMC umbrella, its unmistakable design, and remarkable off-road capabilities are faithfully upheld in EV form. In fact, the latter will arguably be even more impressive thanks to the SUV’s advanced technology, incredible power output, and innovative features, including four-wheel steering, enabling the much-ballyhooed crab mode. The most interesting aspect of the reinvented Hummer is its Ultium battery tech, which provides quick charging times and a massive battery pack that provides an estimated range of 300-plus miles. Inside the cabin, it is visually identical to its pickup-truck counterpart, with a mix of high-tech content and removable roof panels that create an open-air experience.
What’s New for 2024?
Following in the tire marks of the new Hummer EV pickup, which launched in 2023, the SUV version offers a different body style with a shorter wheelbase. The first Hummer EV SUVs will begin reaching GMC dealerships in early 2023.

After years of waiting, buyers who had placed orders will be happy to know that production of the Hummer EV SUV has begun. For those who are only just now getting around to placing their order, we’d suggest the EV2X which adds desirable features compared with the base model.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
Based on the Hummer EV pickup truck–and hinted at by the superscript in their model names–the SUV version will be powered by two or three electric motors. The EV2 and EV2X have a dual-motor setup that generates an estimated 625 horsepower and what GM is claiming to be 7400 pound-feet of torque. The EV3X and the Edition 1 have a trio of motors (one up front and two out back) with a claimed 830 ponies and 11,500 pound-feet. However, we’ve already explained why those incredible torque claims are misleading. We expect actual maximum torque ratings to range between 1000 and 1100 pound-feet. We expect that the most powerful Hummer EV SUV will hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, which is seriously quick for a machine this big and heavy. Compared with the pickup truck, the SUV has a shorter wheelbase (126.7 inches versus 135.6), which should make it more maneuverable in parking situations and out on the trails. It’ll also inherit our favorite off-road goodies from the truck version, including four-wheel steering with CrabWalk and an adjustable air suspension with Extract mode that can raise it 6 inches. GMC also pulls at our heartstrings with a full-size spare tire mounted on the rear gate. Plus, there’s an optional Extreme Off-Road package that brings special hardware that includes 18-inch wheels on 35-inch all-terrain tires, extra underbody protection, low-mounted cameras for improved visibility while maneuvering, enhanced axles with heavy-duty components, a locking front differential, and rear motors that can electronically mimic a locked diff.
More on the Hummer EV SUV
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
Every Hummer benefits from GM’s new Ultium battery technology, which makes it more eco-friendly than the old gas-guzzling H2 and H2 SUT. While the base EV2 model features a standard 400-volt electrical system, it’s also offered with the 800-volt system that comes standard on every other trim. GM has already said that the Hummer EV will have a huge battery pack, but we still don’t know the official size or its usable capacity. Still, along with fast charging speeds of up to 300 kW, we expect the driving range to be at least 250 miles per charge.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
The EPA hasn’t reported the Hummer EV SUV’s fuel economy estimates yet, but we expect it to come in close to the Hummer EV SUT pickup truck’s numbers of 51 MPGe city, 43 MPGe highway, and 47 MPGe combined. When we get a chance, we’ll take the Hummer EV SUV on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with its results. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The interior of the Hummer EV SUV is part rugged and part Sci-Fi. Its three-dimensional dashboard boasts both vertical and horizontal air vents and a pair of large displays that include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Rather than frustrate users for the sake of appearances, the Hummer has lots of hard buttons and physical switchgear, including a thick T-shaped shifter and a rotary drive-mode selector on the center console. The materials in the top-of-the-line Edition 1 also look very upscale, with leather-stitched surfaces and distinct bronze accents, but lower down on the dash and door panels are cheap plastic panels that look and feel out of place in a vehicle this expensive. Another defining feature of the Hummer’s cabin is its removable roof panels. Called the Infinity Roof, the system allows users to lift off the four transparent Sky Panels and the I-bar above the front-seat passengers. Along with storage under the load floor, the SUV Hummer boasts an expansive 82 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded, but the high cargo floor increases effort when loading heavy items.
The Car and Driver Difference
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Hummer’s cutting-edge electric technology will be complemented by a large 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and extensive connectivity options. As with most GMC models, desirable content such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is expected to come standard. We’d also expect available upgrades to include a powerful Bose stereo, built-in navigation, a rear-seat infotainment system, and wireless charging. The SUV Hummer is also available with a 6.0-kW onboard generator that can be used to power all sorts of equipment and even charge other EVs.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Hummer EV SUV will have an enhanced version of GM’s Super Cruise that will allow hands-free driving on the highway. We also expect it to have a host of driver-assistance technology that currently graces many mainstream models. For more information about the Hummer EV SUV’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features will likely include:
Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist Standard adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The Hummer EV SUV comes with a similar warranty to other General Motors products, which means three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.
