2023 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo / Sport Turismo

2023 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo / Sport Turismo

Overview

Wagons aren’t the bestselling bodystyle in the United States, but the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo prove popularity isn’t everything. These are the longroof station-wagon alternatives to the swanky electric Taycan sedan, which we review separately, and they offer a bigger back seat and added cargo space over their more traditional counterpart. Unlike the sedan, however, the wagons come only with dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrains. Horsepower ranges from 469 for base Cross Turismos up to 750 horses in the Cross Turismo Turbo S. There’s also a 590-hp Sport Turismo GTS that ditches the Cross Turismo’s body cladding and additional SUV-inspired ride height. A high-quality interior makes both wagons a pleasure to ride in, and the Cross Turismo’s additional ground clearance might make for an easier passenger exit for some. Both the Cross and Sport Turismo models deliver less range than the normal Taycan, however.

What’s New for 2023?

Porsche improves the Taycan Cross and Sport Turismos—for 2023 and all previous model years—with an update to the battery and charging algorithm that helps increase range and quicken charging speed. Porsche says the Taycan will now precondition its battery to a higher temperature and, as a result, the car will reach its max 270 kWh charge while at a higher state of charge. This also comes with a slight bump in the overall range, but we’re awaiting an official rating from the EPA to confirm how much an improvement that is. The infotainment display has also been redesigned with a more colorful and quicker user interface and wireless Android Auto. The system also can find charging stations using charging-station output as a filter. Porsche’s Variable Light Control is now an option with any Taycan equipped with a panoramic glass roof; it was previously limited to the Sport Turismo GTS. This allows the driver to toggle the roof from clear to opaque electronically. The painted 19-inch Aero wheels have been discontinued.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Taycan Sport Turismo GTS

$137,450

Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo

$157,350

Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S

$191,450

The Cross Turismo lineup aligns with the regular Taycan, except that there’s no rear-wheel-drive model and prices for the wagon are slightly more expensive than the sedan. With that said, we’d recommend the Cross Turismo 4S model, which features a 562-hp powertrain. As with all models, it comes standard with all-wheel drive and an adjustable air suspension. The long-roof Taycan goes on sale this summer and comes with a free three years of Electrify America charging. We’d also recommend taking advantage of the Porsche Experience Center for an extra, albeit worth it, sum.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

Naturally, the Taycan Cross Turismo is motivated exclusively by electricity and shares a chassis and other components with its sedan counterpart. However, the wagon is only offered with all-wheel drive. Power is supplied by two electric motors with total outputs ranging between 469 and 750 horses, depending on the trim level. One of the most interesting elements of the Taycan is its two-speed transmission on the rear axle, a first for an EV. In our testing, it helped the Taycan Turbo S rocket to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, making it one of the quickest cars we’ve ever tested. The 562-hp 4S model made the leap to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. What’s more, unlike normal EVs, which get slower as their battery charge depletes, the Taycan provides consistent performance. Our first drive of the 469-hp Taycan Cross Turismo 4 showed off its expedient acceleration, agile handling, and reassuring brakes.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

While 2023 EPA numbers are TBD, we can tell you last year’s Porsche Taycan 4 and 4S Cross Turismo models both got an EPA-estimated 215 miles of range, while the high-power Turbo S manages just 202 miles. That’s not likely to change much due to Porsche’s recent updates. That’s also less than EPA ratings for equivalent Taycan sedan models. However, we tested the Turbo S sedan on our 75-mph highway route, as well as the less powerful 4S version, and found that the Porsche EVs were more efficient in the real world than their government ratings suggest. Since the Cross Turismo will share the sedan’s 800-volt architecture, we expect the wagon will have a similar, albeit slightly shorter, all-electric range and the ability to charge its battery from 5 to 80 percent in as little as 22.5 minutes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The official MPGe rating for the Taycan Cross Turismo hasn’t been released yet, but we estimated it’ll be 76 combined. Once we can run one on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, we can evaluate its real-world MPGe. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

While there are hints of Porsche’s sports-car history inside its electric sedan—namely a start button on the left side of the steering wheel—there’s also a host of modern high-tech elements, such as a digital gauge cluster. The Taycan Cross Turismo has a full roster of luxury amenities and an extensive list of personalization options. As with the sedan, the wagon offers a standard four-seat configuration or an optional five-seat setup, with the latter adding a small center seat in the back row. Thanks in part to a standard panoramic sunroof as well as a higher roofline, the Cross Turismo offers slightly more headroom in the front and significantly more in the rear seats than the sedan. In addition to the Taycan’s front trunk and useful interior cubby storage, the wagon provides more rear cargo space than its sedan sibling.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Taycan’s interior tech translates to the long-roof model. That means a curved digital gauge cluster, a 10.3-inch touchscreen housed in the middle of the dashboard, and a vertically mounted 8.4-inch touchscreen integrated into the center console. Porsche also offers a 10.3-inch passenger-side touchscreen as well as other desirable features, such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, built-in navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The electrified station wagon also offers the same assortment of standard and optional driver-assistance technology as the regular Taycan, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. For more information about the Taycan Cross Turismo’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

Available adaptive cruise control Available remote-controlled parking Available night vision

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Based on the coverage that Porsche provides for the Taycan’s electrical components, we expect the Cross Turismo to inherit the same policies. The company’s protection periods are competitive with those of other luxury automakers, and its high-voltage battery warranty ranks as one of the best on the market.

Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles Powertrain warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles No complimentary scheduled maintenance
